  • Front Office: Receptionist duties which would include answering the telephone, taking messages, and greeting visitors 
  • Program Assistant: Assist coordinators with light office work which would include filing, photocopying, etc. 
  • Transcriber: Transcribe audio tapes which include interviews with traditional and folk artists. Need good typing skills and a “good ear.” 
  • Spanish Translator: Translate printed flyers and public information into Spanish for bilingual publications. 
  • Spanish Interpreter: On call. Interpret during interviews with Spanish speaking constituents. Most needed in the Las Vegas area.

Volunteer Coordinator

  • Job Description:  Administers all aspects of the volunteer program including planning and development, supervision, and evaluation. Relies on experience and knowledge of the library's goals and objectives, concepts of volunteer administration, and ALA standards for library service and the NLS standards for production of reading materials in recorded and Braille formats. Coordinates volunteer activities including Braille transcription, recording, book inspection, machine repair, and general library assistance.

  • Job Duties:
    1. Evaluate the library's need for volunteer assistance
    2. Plan and coordinate development of the volunteer program, which includes writing job descriptions, a volunteer handbook, and other instructional materials
    3. Ensure adequate volunteer staffing through recruitment, interviewing, placement, and reassignment of volunteers into appropriate jobs
    4. Train volunteers to ensure that jobs are done accurately and completely
    5. Supervise all volunteer activities including coordination of activities among areas of the library, work assignment, and maintenance of records
    6. Provide formal and informal volunteer recognition
    7. Evaluate volunteer program on a regular basis and integrate that information into its further development

  • Qualifications:
    1. Bachelor's degree in personnel administration, social work, social sciences, or related field
    2. Two years' related experience
    3. Knowledge of, or ability to acquire knowledge of, library organization and services, and volunteer management
    4. Ability to train and supervise volunteers
    5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
    Supervision: Supervised by the librarian

Audio-Book Reviewer

  • Job Description: Provides quality control in the production of audio-book master recordings by proofing the completed sound track against an identical print copy of the text used by the narrator.

  • Job Duties:
    1. Critique the accuracy of the narration against the text
    2. Critique the consistency of overall technical quality
    3. Critique the artistic elements of the completed recordings
    4. Critique the finished sound track to ensure that no word fragments or shadows or any extraneous noise remain in the completed recordings
    5. Note clearly all errors found in the sound tracks and where they occur in the text
    6. Note clearly any other comment that may improve future performance of the narrator or monitor
    7. Ensure that all announcements are narrated according to the requirements of NLS technical standard #3
    8. Check to ensure that the labeling of all reels and boxes is according to the requirements of NLS technical standard #3

  • Qulifications:
    1. Ability to read print material with facility
    2. Good command of the American English language
    3. Ability to listen effectively
    4. Sensitivity to the artistic elements of spoken communications
    5. Demonstrated ability to acquire competence in handling audio playback equipment
    6. Broad literary background
    7. Demonstrated ability to use a dictionary and other reference material
    8. High degree of discipline, motivation, and thoroughness
    Supervision: Supervised by the Librarian

Recorded-Book Inspector

  • Job Description: Ensures that books recorded on cassettes are complete and in good condition for circulation to patrons.

  • Job Duties:
    1. Inspect incoming books for defective, missing, or misplaced cassettes
    2. Rewind cassettes
    3. Inspect containers for damage
    5. Replace cassettes in proper container, ensuring proper packing
    6. Process unrepairable materials appropriately
    7. Reshelve books that are in good condition

  • Qualifications:
    1. Ability to read container labels
    2. Ability to manipulate containers and contents
    3. Ability to use players and rewinding equipment
    4. Ability to detect the presence of damage to the materials
    Supervision: Supervised by the volunteer coordinator
