Carson Area Organizations Receive Nearly $65,000 in Arts Council Grants

Carson City, Nevada. The Nevada Arts Council approved grant awards totaling $500,867 in support of statewide arts and cultural activities and arts education for fiscal year 2010.  Carson City area arts organizations received more than $15,000 in Arts Education Program grants and more than $40,000 in Grant Program awards.

Commission for Cultural Affairs Letters of Intent to Apply for Funding Due August 1

Carson City, Nevada. The Commission for Cultural Affairs, which awards $3 million a year to fund the restoration of historic buildings for use as cultural centers, requires new applicants to submit a letter of intent by August 1, 2009. This is to qualify for the upcoming 2010 Commission grant cycle.

Archaeologists Investigate Mark Twain’s Virginia City

Carson City, Nevada – A team of archaeologists is currently continuing excavations that they hope will shed light on life in Virginia City during the time when Mark Twain called the place home. A summer field school operated by the Anthropology Department of the University of Nevada, Reno has begun excavating the original site of Thomas Maguire’s Opera House on D Street. A second excavation is also underway in an area known as the Barbary Coast, a place of vice and crime during the 1860s and 1870s.
