Carson City, Nev. -- The Nevada State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) announces that Nevada will celebrate Archaeology Awareness and Historic Preservation Month in May of 2009. The entire month has been dedicated as an opportunity for communities and organizations to share Nevada’s history by providing activities for the entire family. This year’s theme is “Exploring Deep History in Nevada” and will feature walking tours of historic neighborhoods, a historic mansion and historic businesses.
For those who have an interest in events further in the past, the Nevada Rock Art Foundation will lead tours of rock art around Nevada, and federal and state agency archaeologists will host archaeological and culture history fairs in Las Vegas and Elko that feature hands on activities for children. The Nevada Historic Preservation Office invites you to participate in one or more of these engaging activities to discover Nevada’s heritage.
