Honor Nevada's Arts Leaders
The Nevada Arts Council and the Governor's Office invite you to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Governor's Arts Awards by nominating worthy individuals, organizations and businesses whose contributions deserve Nevada's highest award in the arts. Since its inception in 1979, GAA has honored 173 individuals, arts organizations and businesses. This year's celebration returns to Las Vegas with a public ceremony on April 1, 2010; time and location TBA.
Nomination Packets
Nomination Packets must be received by the Carson City office of the Nevada Arts Council by 5 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2009. This is not a postmark deadline. Late or faxed nominations will NOT be considered. Nomination Guidelines
Eligibility
Nominees must be current residents of the State of Nevada or organizations/businesses that work in and for the benefit of Nevada. Previous recipients of a Governor¹s Arts Award and current Nevada Arts Council staff, board, contractors or their immediate families are not eligible.
Selection
The Board of the Nevada Arts Council selects award recipients based on the following criteria: (1) the significance and/or magnitude of the contribution and achievement, (2) the breadth of the populations served and the recognition brought by virtue of the achievement, and (3) the length of time and/or intensity of activity dedicated to the arts.
The Categories
- Excellence in the Arts - This award honors ar6ists or arts-producing organizations whose work has achieved a level ofexcellence and who have made a significant impact in their community and/or the state.

Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts -This award honors artists or organizations recognized as significant tradition-bearers or elders who demonstrate ongoing commitment to the preservation and perpetuation of traditional culture in Nevada.

Leadership in Arts: Education - Schools, individuals, organizations or businesses that have made significant contributions through leadership, creativity and partnership building to advance arts education in Nevada's schools and communities.

Leadership in the Arts: Individuals - This award recognizes individuals, paid or volunteer, working in the arts that have demonstrated long-term leadership resulting in significant contributions to the arts in their community and/or the state.

Leadership in the Arts: Organizations - This award recognizes a nonprofit arts organization for exceptional artistic achievement, outstanding programming or specific leadership initiatives that have stimulated excellence, growth and support and/or availability of the arts in Nevada.

Patronage in the Arts - Individuals or businesses that have sustained and enhanced the arts in their community and/or the state, through contributions of time, effort or financial resources.

A special citation for Distinguished Service, including posthumous recognition, may be awarded at the discretion of the Board. This category is not open to nominations from the public.
29th Annual Governor's Arts Awards
On March 5, 2009 more than 400 people honored recipients of the 29th Annual Governor's Arts Awards (GAA) at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino in Reno. In addition to comments provided by the Mendy Elliot, deputy chief of staff for Governor Gibbons, and Tim Jones, chair of the Nevada Arts Council, the evening was filled with video vignettes of the awardees and performances by a quintet from the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra, a piano improvisation by award recipient Dr. James Winn and reception music by David Bugli and Janet Snape. The 29th Annual GAA recipients received artwork created by Reno artist Linda Yuroff.
The evening's success was ensured by the energy and support provided by dozens of individuals and businesses-including the performers, the staff at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino Center and our co-sponsor - Sierra Arts, with support from the Estipona Group.
