More Than 1800 Students Registered for 2010 Nevada Poetry Out Loud
The fifth year of the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest (POL) is kicking into high gear. Again, POL will occur statewide in Nevada, with 15 out of the 16 school districts with high schools participating. Semi-finalists from each district will travel to Reno on March 13 to compete in the Nevada State Finals at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino, starting at 12 noon. More than 1800 students are participating in classroom and after school Poetry Out Loud programs and district competitions.
Judges at the State Finals will score students on physical presence, voice and articulation, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, overall performance, accuracy and appropriateness of dramatization.
Cash prizes totaling $6,000 will be awarded to Nevada’s first, second and third place winners and their respective schools. The first-place winner of Nevada’s competition will travel to Washington D.C. and compete against students from across the nation and its territories on April 26 - 27, 2010. A total of $50,000 in scholarship and school prizes will be awarded, with the national winner receiving $20,000.

Poetry Out Loud - Featuring Nevada State Champion CBS News Sunday Morning featured a segment on the 2009 Poetry Out Loud National Finals, which took place in April. Host (and poet) Charles Osgood visited Washington, DC, to tape interviews with various participants, including guest judge Garrison Keillor and state champions.
What Happened in 2009? Fourteen counties out of 16 with high schools participated with local and semi-final competitions.
The number of participants more than doubled from the previous year, with 33 schools represented and more than 1200 students competing in semi-finals. The State Finals, at the Siena Hotel in Reno, was heavily attended by families, friends and supporters from each county.
Emily Orellana, a sophomore at Rainshadow Community Charter School in Reno, took first place at the State Finals and competed for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes in the National Finals in Washington, D.C. Jaitee Pitts, a senior at Pahrump Valley High School won second place and Stephanie Kulla, a sophomore at Carson High School, took third. Each received $500, with $1,000 for her school. All participating school districts reported favorable outcomes, and the students who participated at the State Finals demonstrated exceptional levels of confidence, talent, and artistry.
Why Poetry? As John Barr, president of The Poetry Foundation noted, “…In the hands of the poet, our everyday speech becomes a musical instrument.” Poetry Out Loud engages students in the dynamic aspects of the spoken word and theatre through poetry recitation. The program encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, which help students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about our literary heritage.
Sponsors Poetry Out Loud is a partnership program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Nevada Alliance of Arts Education, the Nevada Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
