Nevada is rich in historical resources housed in its archives, libraries,  historical repositories, museums, special collections, and state and local government agencies.  During FY 2008/2009 with LSTA funding, the collaborative nature of Nevada's statewide digitization projects was formalized with a series of advisory committee meetings and community forums that developed a shared vision and identified long term goals allowing for the wise and effective use of available resources in Nevada to support the state's digital resources.

The purpose of the Nevada Statewide Digital Initiative is to:

Increase access to the collections held by Nevada's cultural heritage insitutions through digital access to materials by residents of Nevada and scholars and researchers interested in Nevada's culture and history.

The Nevada Statewide Digital Advisory Committee identified a series of activities intended to build statewide collaboration including:

  1. creating a collection policy;
  2. creating a website that links existing projects;
  3. adopting statewide best practice and standards;
  4. creating local partnerships that would build up to statewide partnerships;
  5. continuing support for the statewide digital advisory committee including
    meeting four times a year; and
  6. developing a digital pilot project which models the "curatorial traditions"
    libraries, archives and museums use to crete and manage their digital
    materials.

Statewide Digital Advisory Committee

Advisory committee members participate in the identification of issues regarding digitization in Nevada, collaborate in the planning and development of a statewide digital initiative, do research in specified areas pertaining to the charge of the committee, provide the information for dissemination, and contribute to effective communication among the key digital stakeholders in Nevada.  Distribution of membership includes archives, academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries, museums, historical repositories, records centers, State Historic Records Board, State Council on Libraries on Literacy, Nevada Department of Education.
